Canning Jar Prep

Last year I got a crop to 1qt ball jars for the first time and was shocked by how bad a freshly opened ball jar smells. I let it air out a few minutes before putting crop in for cure. The cure came out great but was wondering if others noticed the smell and wondered if you wash the jar with soap and water before use. I would think it's pretty sterile from the factory. Also, has anyone used the 2qt jars and how they worked? Thanks and happy growing.

I live by the beach and it takes some time to get "jar ready"..
I always cure the persy part of each harvest..rarely have time before the butchers want it in the stores for the majority.
I never have washed em before...maybe if I get some new ones I'll have to try that...in the past just wiped em clean and stuffed em ....hmmmmm
