wasn't to hard to build.. used a fish tank water pump, 125 gallons per hour. will hold about 4 gallons of water in reservoir, and has a 3 gallon grow area.

.

just some cross-over experience I have with water pumps
(water cooled computer)

"best" way to hurt a pumps flow is restrict its INLET
any added stress (restricting flow) will raise pump temps fast

I suggest a smaller pump rather than trying to restrict the one you have

-or-
add a direct "drain" pipe/tube with a valve before the "drip square" dumping flow/pressure back into res
that way, you can adjust how much pressure/flow your taking away from the drip
without the valve the water will just take the path of least resistance and flow right back to res

[I can/will draw picture if my words didn't convey my thoughts well enough... it's happened before :P ]

i can add a t connection in the line going up to the ring.put a valve on the t on the outlet pointing to the side, use a elbow, and put the drain there.that way the water will want to flow down not up. will just have to manipulate the valve to get the water to go up. the pump should be under no extra pressure that way, and plus, the valve will be above the hydroton, can be easily adjusted

Looks like your idea will work, the only thing I would keep an eye on is the glued fitting on the outside of your tub. This could be a leak point.

I don't really understand what you are trying to do here and the reason for the PVC manifold with the holes in it? Could you explain your concept a little more as I really am lost....?

Question, how much top flow water is to much? If the water is full of oxygen then it should not be an issue right?

I was just wondering what your goal was here. I can understand experimenting--I do it all the time, but I do know what I am aiming at achieving in the end. That's all I was asking is what you are trying to make.

The water farm does not use a water pump. If you want a water farm type system, take it apart to see how it operates or there will be DIYs on places like You Tube. It appears that the holes you have drilled in the PVC are too large, letting streams of water through, not a drip. It will matter how much water flow you have. Also, too large a pump will raise the res temps too high and require a chiller to keep them in line.

i really had no idea what i was doing lol, just playing around, i get bored easily, but why not turn it into an ebb and flow system?? should work just fine right? get rid of the top drip, flood the top tote, let it drain back down to res. it would be easily portable and easy to change the res solution. thoughts?
